Where a Generalist Recruiter Falls Short

Where most recruiters fall short

Where Generalist Recruitment Costs You

Generalist HSE recruitment is built for office-based compliance roles. Tier-one energy and engineering projects demand something different. Here is where the gap shows up.

Generalist recruiters miss the outage window

Standard H&S recruitment runs 8 to 12 weeks from brief to a CV on your desk. A CCGT outage window or a wind turbine maintenance lift cannot wait that long, and every idle day on a tier-one site carries real cost in plant hire, crew downtime, and schedule slippage. Our industry-specialist talent pool is already in place and continuously re-graded, which is why we commit to 48 hours in writing while generalist recruiters cannot.

Template RAMS fail the first regulator visit

Officers sourced from generalist recruiters often produce RAMS and Lift Plans pulled from template libraries. Our officers develop and review RAMS, Method Statements, and Lift Plans from first principles. We resolved 5 critical compliance gaps across 63 substations in 6 months, including a Lift Plan deficiency under General Application Regulation 42.

Harsh environments need industry knowledge from day one

A safety officer who has never operated in offshore wind, on an HV transformer network, or in a SCADA commissioning environment needs weeks of on-site orientation. Our specialist talent pool officers know the equipment, the regulatory framework, and the environment before they set foot on your project. No orientation weeks, no ramp-up cost.

Northern Ireland · Wind Energy · SCADA Commissioning

A Design Flaw Found Before a Second Incident

On a 9-turbine wind farm in Northern Ireland, our safety officer was tasked with overseeing the installation of SCADA control panels. Rather than relying on standard reference documentation, he engineered a replica panel and conducted all testing on-site before the live installation.

During replica testing, he identified a design flaw in the panel configuration. Left undetected, the same flaw would have been present across a sister site. The fix was applied to both sites before any live energisation took place, preventing a second incident that would not have appeared in a standard safety audit.

How it played out

  1. Scoped

    9-turbine wind farm, Northern Ireland.

  2. Replicated

Built a replica panel on-site for pre-installation testing.

  3. Caught

Detected a design flaw before live energisation.

  4. Cascaded

Applied the fix to a sister site — preventing a second incident.

Questions we hear most often

Questions About HSE Recruitment Answered

What qualifications do Coyle safety officers hold?

Every contract safety officer in our talent pool is degree-qualified in occupational health and safety or a related field. Our founder, Gavin Coyle, holds CMIOSH chartered status and an MBS Level 9 from DCU. We are NSAI-certified to ISO 14001, ISO 9001, and ISO 45001, and hold IOSH corporate and NRF memberships. The full credential stack is on every engagement.

Can you supply safety officers for our specific industry?

Yes. Our talent pool is organised by industry across Wind Energy, Utilities (HV substations, overhead lines, subsea cable), Power Generation (CCGT outages, conventional and renewable), Oil & Gas, and Engineering (data centres, anaerobic digesters, mine demolition, M&E installs). Every officer arrives knowing the equipment, the regulations, and the project type. We have placed safety people on wind energy projects in Ireland and the UK, utilities work across Ireland, and engineering builds with Jones Engineering, John Sisk & Son, and Multiplex.

How does your day rate compare to taking on a permanent hire?

Contract safety officers are employed by Coyle Group. You pay a day rate for the placement rather than absorbing employer-of-record costs, payroll overhead, notice periods, or recruitment risk. For projects with a defined duration, or where you need to scale capacity up quickly and back down when the project ends, contract supply consistently costs less than a permanent hire over the project lifecycle.

What contract options are available?

We offer short-term assignments (days to weeks), long-term contracts (months to years), and permanent placements for senior SHEQ leadership roles. Contract officers remain employed by Coyle Group for the placement period. Permanent placements transfer directly to your organisation on a commission basis. All contract terms are discussed during the initial project brief.

How does the 48-hour deployment actually work in practice?

Our talent pool is already in place. We carry 100+ degree-qualified safety officers, organised by industry and continuously re-graded on real-world delivery. When you contact us, our management team takes the call the same day, matches the brief to the right officer from the talent pool, confirms availability and logistics, and has someone on your site within 48 hours. We have delivered this for offshore wind in Finland, SCADA panel installations in Northern Ireland, and 63-substation rollouts across Ireland. Speed at this level requires a pre-built, pre-vetted talent pool, which is why competitors without one don't publish a comparable commitment.

Will I deal with the founder or an account manager?

You deal directly with our chartered founder. Gavin Coyle, CMIOSH, takes the initial call and is available outside of business hours when the project demands it. 17 of our 23 Trustpilot reviews name Gavin personally, and most cite his out-of-hours availability as the reason they return. If an incident happens at 02:00 on a remote site, our chartered founder is on the phone.
